Luke 22: 1-38 Jesus Faces the End was created by Joyce
In Jesus day thousands of Jews from the known world gathered in Jerusalem for the Passover celebration in the city.
As the people sacrificed their Passover lambs, the lamb of God was about to be sacrificed to set people free from spiritual slavery.

V2 Why were the priests afraid of the people? But they did not fear God.

V3-6 How sad that it was one of the twelve that betrayed Jesus, it reminds us that no matter our standing in the Church or with our inner circle. Satan prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour 1Peter 5: 8, Judas was one of the Twelve chosen by Jesus, yet he betrays his Master. It must of broke Jesus heart!

(1 Corinthians 10: 12 ) reminds us “(So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall)!

Have you ever been betrayed by anyone close to you?

V 7-8 Jesus respected and observed the Passover it was an essential part of the Jewish faith it was a reminder of Gods help in the past but it was also an indication of Gods help that was to come. We are to continue to follow Jesus example until He comes again in remembrance of Him.

V 9-13
V9 A man carrying a jar of water, this was unusual in its self as women usually carried water in jars, so the disciples would of noticed this man. Jesus doesn’t have a house of His own; Mathew 8:20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. However Psalm 50:10 - 12 Says; 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

What does this show us about Jesus?

V14-16 This was Jesus last meal with His Disciples a special time, why?

V17-21What does this mean for us?

V22 -23 Jesus new who would betray Him. The Disciples never suspected Judas v23 he had covered up his betrayal well.

V24-27 The Disciples had talked about this before Mark 9:33-34 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? 34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

John 13: 1-17 Jesus washes His Disciples feet; This is a great object lesson for us all.

How should we behave especially when we have authority over others? What is Jesus modelling?

In Gods Kingdom true greatness is measured by humble service not status, its an upside down Kingdom where only those who bear the cross can wear the crown.

How much of a servant am I?
What are my motives?
Who gets the credit?
Am I striving more to serve or be served?

V28 - 31 The Disciples will be rewarded 29- 30 and so will we but God knows our motives and when we serve out of our love for God He alone will be Glorified.

V31-33What was Jesus special warning to Peter?

V33 - 38
V33 Peter still remained confident in himself but it wasn’t what Peter could do, it was through Jesus’s prayers that Peter was saved Jesus new that willpower and human resolve would be inadequate without the strength provided by the Holy Spirit. On his own Peter would not be able to stand or come back from his denial. How wonderful that our Lord Jesus prays for us constantly He is protecting us from things we are unaware of too.

How can we stand firm when we are under pressure?

The amazing thing is that we can always return to the Lord and become even stronger in our faith, we all make mistakes and crumble under pressure. Jesus new that Peter would turn back to Him because He had prayed for him and he new Peters heart V33, we know that it is a spiritual battle.

Are we forgiving and accepting of our brothers and sisters when they fall, do we judge them or pray for them?

How can our setbacks and failures become tools we use to help others who are struggling?

God can always bring good out of bad, if Peter wasn’t reinstated into the body what would of happened?

V35 -38 What does Jesus mean? were the Disciples taking Him literally?

Is Jesus teaching them to plan and be practical to use their common sense because He will be leaving them? They will face a hostile world without Him and they have to be prepared.

V2 Why were the priests afraid of the people? But they did not fear God

Like Saul, they believed they were doing the work of God. They were upholding their religion that had not changed for many centuries. This Jesus was a blasphemer and troublemaker.

Luke 4:28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

I don't think Judas expected anything bad to happen as a result of accepting the bribe. I think he was genuinely shocked by how events unfolded. That's why he committed suicide when he saw what happened.

Do we sometimes do things and consider the possible outcomes to be safe, rather than praying about it first?

I think like you Steve that Judas was not aware of the consequences of his actions but it does say in the passage that Satan entered Judas so he must have been dissatisfied in some way with Jesus teaching or the ministry and as those feelings came into play Satan was easily able to come in and prompt the actions. Satan is the father of lies so we don't know what lies he used to cause Judas to act and betray Jesus. We must always be alert as it says in 1 Peter 5 v 8 'Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour'.. Then our response ...v 9 'Resist him, standing firm in the faith,..'.

Even when Jesus repeatedly tells the disciples this is His last Passover with them and that one of them would betray Him they carry on as normal not seeming to believe what Jesus is saying. Sometimes wonder if we like them do not respond to the Lord's direction in certain areas in our lives.. Or do not act on His word when we know it is the truth.
Being a servant is sometimes not easy as my pride can be prodding to say this is not fair!! In the Calvary road there is a verse from a hymn which says 'Lord bend that proud and stiff necked I, help me to bow the head and die; Beholding Him on Calvary, Who bowed His head for me. My prayer for me. Reminding me too that dying to self is a daily if not moment by moment act as we seek to serve as Jesus. Grateful for His patience and help.
